Happy Holidays

This photo is not from our farm.  I got it off the internet.  I love the dogs and horses.  There is also a donkey behind "baby Jesus".  Some people are so creative, and have such cooperative pets.    Merry Christmas!

Also....here is a great and cheery Christmas song video:
A GIGGLE with the GOATS   Jingle Bells Holiday Performance

Christmas Eve day was very busy for me, trying to get everything accomplished....but I had great help from Britney, Dan and Joe.   I also decided not everything (including last week's Blog) had to be done before we left for Florida.  A beautiful snow
started falling about noon, and continued all day.  Here it is starting to accumulate on Sir Loin even.

The manure pile to the left in this picture is much more attractive under a blanket of snow.

It was a beautiful Christmas Eve Snow, so pure and peaceful.

The wind  picked up early afternoon causing some drifting.  Dan and I spent extra time doing chores because there were 4 chickens missing that we had to search for.
Sir Loin making his way to the corn crib for his evening grain.

     Amiga...."Wait for me"

Daniel found the chickens under the corn crib....but they would not come out.  Daniel stomped on the floor which scared them to the end where I could catch them.  In the process it also riled up Amiga and Sir Loin.

     Here are the chickens
hiding under the corn crib.

     Amiga looks to see
what Daniel has found.

The chickens get caught at the barn when it snows and blows during the day because the snow is too deep for them to walk through.  So Daniel shovels a new path.

Courtney and Mike braved the snow and came over for dinner, reporting that our drive was the worst part of their trip. (Andy hadn't plowed yet because it was still coming down.)   After dinner we opened packages.... and I was humbled by the generous gift from Courtney of a new saddle.

Amiga was covered with snow when I brought her in at "bed time".  I brushed off the snow and then tried to "fluff" Amiga's hair so it would dry better and help keep her warm.

You can see the steam rising off of her in this picture.

We awoke to a beautiful white Christmas.

I packed, organized, and did last minute cleaning while also getting some pictures of the snow.   The trailer needs to be unhitched and the Expedition cleaned and packed for the annual trek to Florida.

Below Amiga and Sir Loin enjoy their morning hay.
In the paddock, the cluster river birch continue to flourish in spite of the winds and snow since they are tied and fenced off from the horse and cow.

     Andy came during the night,
after it stopped snowing, and
cleared off the drive.

The chickens make their way through the snow using the path.

Britney and I were off for the air port at about 4:00.   There were too many of us to fit into the Expedition, so Britney and I were flying down to Florida while Joe, Courtney, Mike and Daniel were driving straight thru.  Due to mechanical problems, our 5pm flight out of B/N was over 2 hrs late.  So, we missed our connecting flight out of Atlanta.  There were no other flights that night so the air lines put us up in a hotel, and they could not get us on a flight until 2:30 the next afternoon. Flights had been canceled or delayed because of snow in Atlanta ..... their first white Christmas in 100 years.

Sunday 26th, we got up at 5:30, only getting 4 1/2 hrs of sleep, and headed back to the airport.  We had decided to wait (2 hours) as "Stand-by" passengers for the first flight out of Atlanta to Orlando.  We made it on the 8am flight!  Britney took this picture of us when we discovered we were "on the plane".  The man in the back ground was sharing our joy.  His wife reprimanded him after the snap of the shutter.  I didn't know why
she was fussing at the time.

Once landed in Orlando, we drove to Winter Haven to pick up Mom, had lunch, and then headed on down to Long Boat Key.  Joe and the three "kids" still beat us there.  Florida was not warm and sunny, but neither was it cold and snowy, so we were glad to be there.  This picture of the famous sailor kissing nurse statue was taken from the rental car as I followed Joe to the Sarasota airport to drop it off. I wasn't even looking through the view finder, just held it up and clicked.  Is there a law against shooting photos while operating a vehicle?  Here is a better photo of it from the internet.

We had a fun, festive week as usual, in spite of the colder than normal temperatures to begin with.  I was glad there was no rain and that we could enjoy being outside in light-weight jackets.  We walked, sat on the beach or by the pool, and even swam by the end of the week.  The meals were great and we had more food than we needed, especially the snacks and sweets.  We enjoyed playing games, talking and watching TV together.  I will post pictures of our week in my next Blog because I did not take many and need to up-load some from my sisters who do much better at taking photos and operating a camera.

With a nephew in Afghanistan now and Daniel heading there this spring, this Christmas card was extra meaningful.  I thank our soldiers for giving their lives to defend our freedom and pray God guards and protects them.  God brings us true peace on Earth amidst the violence, hatred and chaos.

It's Beginning to Look A Lot

It looks like my chickens are taking a sabbatical for the winter, egg production is way down.  No longer do we get six eggs a day, now I am lucky to get two, usually the brown eggs.  I did get an Ameraucana's egg the other day, but it was this little mini egg.

It looks like winter is here to stay....with additional snows coming regularly and what we have not melting because it has not gotten above 30 degrees hardly ever. Amiga and Sir Loin have settled in to life in the snow, digging for grass some of the time and eating at the hay feeder other times.

Zorro remains on stall rest so it looks like it is going to be a long winter for him.

Amiga comes to visit him regularly.

Some items for Christmas have been arriving by UPS.  Abbey likes playing in the boxes and taunting Kaysha.  I would rather her mess here than under the tree taking bows off of the pretty packages.

Courtney decided to board  Zorro at Marj's, who has an indoor arena. With his lameness he needs to be walked daily.  He has also been going nuts stuck in the barn while Amiga is out with the cow.  On Wednesday  afternoon Marj came over with her trailer so we could load Zorro.  We decided not to even try to get him on our trailer.  Marj did a great job of maneuvering her big rig between our snow drifts on our snowy, icy drive.

Brother comes over to check out the trailer and take part in the action.

Courtney and Marj discuss where the best place to load Zorro might be on our drive with it's many ice patches.

Smile ladies...notice Bro in the picture.

Courtney led Zorro through the snow drifts trying to avoid walking
him on the ice glazed drive.

Getting Zorro to the trailer was a piece of cake compared to getting him on the trailer.

Courtney tried, Joe tried, I tried....

     Marj tried....Time kept ticking
     and the sun was setting.

We even put Amiga on but Zorro would still not load.  The wind picked up and we got colder and colder.

We were about to give up after over 2 hours of trying, but decided to give it one more big effort....and Zorro got on!  Thank You God.

After Zorro was taken to Marj's she brought Amiga back.  I put her out with Sir Loin to eat and exercise before stalling her for the night.

After putting Amiga in her stall for the night, she was neighing for Zorro while I was in the tack room feeding kitties. I went in and talked to her.  She was lonely a few nights until she got used to Zorro being gone.

It snowed a few inches the night after loading Zorro.  I pushed snow around and then feed the horse, cow, kitties, and chickens.

The hay feeder has been an attraction to the chickens and kitties, not just the horse and cow.

Baby had made a nest in the hay.

       But Amiga chased her off.

Bro had fun playing in the hay and Missy even came to interact.

Zorro is getting along well at Marj's.  He has lots of other horses in the barn to keep him company and can be walked in the in-door arena. We have 2 foot snow drifts or bare ground covered in ice out here.....neither good for walking a lame horse....and it has been very cold outside with the wind chill.  I met up with Courtney at Marj's on Saturday afternoon.  I took Amiga with me so she could visit Zorro.  Courtney walked Zorro while Richard worked with his horse and I rode Amiga.

Then Courtney rode bare back on Amiga (she doesn't like my saddle) and I cleaned a stall to help Marj out.  We had Zorro tied at the rail of the
indoor arena
because he needs to learn to stand calmly and patiently while tied.  He has broken several halters when pulling against pressure instead of giving in to it.  Then I rode bare back while Courtney walked Zorro again.

We got a hoar frost over night which was beautiful Sunday morning.

It snowed on the way to school Monday and with the wind it was already drifting onto the roads.  Mid afternoon when I came up the drive through the snow, Amiga's head popped up from eating way out in the field.  Next thing I know, she takes off at an easy lope for the barn.  She is so cute....and I love that she recognizes my car and comes "running".  I went out to visit her as Brother and Kaysha joined me in frolicking in the snow.

Late afternoon it started snowing again, and blowing, and then changed to freezing rain.  Our Growth Group Potluck was canceled because of the weather.  I am starting to tire of this wind and freezing or snowy precipitation.  Winter was fun...but now I am ready for spring.

Tuesday it stayed warm and mild and some of the snow melted off.  We can actually see dry bare ground in some places.

Today was the last day of school.
I met my friend Ann for a late lunch.
Joe, Britney and I watched "It's A Wonderful Life" and then I went to bed.

Wed. (12/23)  I celebrated the fact that we are now on the up swing - days are finally getting longer and sunnier!   Whoot whoot!  I met with our house sitter but had troubles focusing and getting other things done.

Thursday I looked at my to-do list and was over-whelmed and wished I had some of Santa's elves to help me.  I needed to :  1- grocery shop and fix tomorrow's Christmas eve dinner. 2- clean house, pick-up, vacuum, dust etc. 3- repair broken Christmas lights that have already been hung and have stopped working. 4- shop for gifts (I haven't even started yet) and wrap each of them.  5- fill all feed bins, clean all bowls and buckets, and have everything ready for our house sitter.  6- do laundry and pack my bags so that I am ready to fly out Christmas night. 7- get my lessons planned and xeroxed so that I am ready for school when I get back from Florida on 1/4.

Ready or not, Christmas will arrive on the 25th.  And even though not everything is done, it is beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
